The Volvo S60 Recharge T8 is one of the more understated PHEV options on the New Zealand used market — a genuinely quick all-wheel-drive sedan that can also run on electricity alone for the daily commute. Here's what matters if you're considering one.

What's under the skin

The T8 Recharge pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged and supercharged petrol four with an electric motor driving the rear axle, giving all-wheel drive and combined outputs from 287kW on early cars up to 340kW on the Polestar Engineered version. The battery is an 11.6kWh lithium-ion pack under the rear seats and centre tunnel, rated for around 45km of WLTP electric range. In practical Auckland or Wellington driving, treat that as 28-34km before the petrol engine takes over — hillier commutes and motorway running will sit at the lower end.

Model years and what changed

  • 2019-2020 (launch): T8 Twin Engine, 11.6kWh battery, 287kW combined, standard adaptive suspension
  • 2021-2022 (facelift): Google-based infotainment, same battery and drivetrain, minor software efficiency gains
  • Polestar Engineered: Öhlins dampers, gold seatbelts, Brembo brakes, 340kW combined output, same 45km EV range

What they're selling for in NZ (2026)

YearTrimTypical used price
2019-2020T8 Inscription$37,000-$45,000
2021-2022T8 R-Design$43,000-$52,000
2021-2023Polestar Engineered$56,000-$66,000

Most cars in the market are UK or Japanese-market used imports rather than NZ-new, so panel condition and prior accident history are worth checking through a full vehicle history report.

Pre-purchase checks specific to the T8

  • High-voltage battery state of health — ask your inspecting workshop to pull a capacity report via the OBD port, not just a warning-light check
  • Onboard charger fault codes — a moderately common failure point on higher-mileage cars, usually shows as slow or incomplete charging
  • Rear e-axle noise — a faint whine at low speed under light throttle is normal; a grinding or clunking noise under load is not
  • Charging port and flap — sits in the rear guard and takes weather exposure over time; check the seal and micro-switch
  • 12V battery — Volvo's HV system relies on a healthy 12V battery to wake up; a tired 12V battery causes no-start and no-charge symptoms that owners often mistake for HV faults

Running costs against a comparable petrol sedan

A Volvo S60 T8 owner who charges overnight at home and does mostly local driving can realistically cover 60-70% of typical weekly kilometres on electricity, at roughly a third of the per-km cost of premium 98-octane fuel. Once outside EV range, fuel use sits around 7.5-8.5L/100km — reasonable for a 287kW-plus AWD sedan, but not hybrid-efficient once the battery is depleted.

Battery replacement — the real cost question

The high-voltage battery isn't a commonly failing part on the S60 Recharge, but because it's a low-volume model in New Zealand, reconditioned packs are much harder to source than for a Toyota or Mitsubishi hybrid. If a replacement is needed:

OptionInstalled cost
Reconditioned pack (subject to availability)$6,500-$8,500
New OEM pack$11,000-$14,000

Budget on the higher end and expect longer lead times than for mainstream hybrid brands.

Who it suits

The S60 Recharge makes sense for someone who wants genuine performance and all-wheel-drive security with the option of near-silent, low-cost commuting most of the week. It's a poor fit if you can't charge at home or work — without regular charging, you're carrying a heavy unused battery around and getting worse real-world fuel economy than a comparable diesel. Get an independent PHEV-specific pre-purchase inspection before committing; general mechanics without hybrid/EV training routinely miss charger and BMS fault codes on these cars.
