The Nissan Leaf is New Zealand's most popular EV, which means more Leaf battery replacements happen here than any other electric car. Prices have dropped significantly since 2020, and the options available in 2026 are better than ever. Here's a complete breakdown.

What determines the cost

Two things drive the price: which generation Leaf you have, and whether you go new, reconditioned, or refurbished.

Generation differences

2011–2017 (24 kWh and 30 kWh packs) These are the most common on NZ roads. Replacement packs are widely available because there's an established second-hand supply from Japan. A reconditioned 24 kWh pack with 70%+ capacity costs $600–$1,100 for the pack itself; installed, expect $1,400–$1,700 all up including labour and diagnostics.

2018–present (40 kWh and 62 kWh packs) These are harder to source. The 40 kWh packs are now available reconditioned; 62 kWh packs are still mainly new. A reconditioned 40 kWh installation runs $1,700–$2,200. New 40 kWh packs from Nissan are $3,500–$4,500 installed.

New vs reconditioned: what's the difference

New (OEM) packs come direct from Nissan and carry a Nissan warranty. They're the most expensive option but give you a known-good battery with full capacity.

Reconditioned packs are pulled from lower-mileage donor vehicles, tested cell by cell, and any weak cells are replaced. A reputable reconditioner will give you a capacity report and a 12-month warranty. This is the most popular option in NZ — the savings are significant and quality is reliable when done by a specialist.

Refurbished (cell-level) means your original pack is opened, weak cells are replaced or rebalanced, and the pack is reassembled. Cost is typically $800–$1,200 all in, but it depends on how many cells need replacing. Best suited to packs with localised cell failure rather than general capacity loss.

What's included in our price

When we quote a Leaf battery replacement, the price includes:

It does not include the 12V auxiliary battery, which we recommend replacing at the same time if it's over 3 years old (around $180 fitted).

Does it make financial sense?

At current used Leaf prices in NZ ($8,000–$18,000 depending on year and condition), a $1,500–$2,000 battery replacement on a 2013–2016 Leaf usually makes sense if the rest of the car is sound. The running costs of a working Leaf — no petrol, minimal servicing — are hard to beat.

The break-even calculation gets tighter on older 24 kWh cars where the capacity after replacement is still modest (around 18–20 kWh usable). For city driving in Auckland, that's fine. For anyone doing regular intercity runs, stepping up to a 40 kWh-era car is worth considering.

How long will the replacement pack last

A quality reconditioned pack from a reputable supplier typically delivers another 80,000–130,000 km before significant degradation. With a new pack, expect similar longevity to the original — 150,000+ km under normal use.
