Where NZ examples come from

Nearly all MX-30s on the used market arrived here from Japan, where the car launched in late 2020. A smaller batch of NZ-new cars was sold through Mazda dealers from 2021, and some private importers have brought in UK cars, which tend to have slightly higher factory spec but higher mileage on average. The freestyle doors: charming or annoying?

The rear doors open backwards and can only be opened once the front door is open — there's no separate rear door handle. The MX-30 uses conventional hydraulic brakes assisted by regenerative braking, and because the small battery limits how hard the car is driven day to day, brake pad wear tends to be lower than on a petrol equivalent. Annual servicing runs $180–$260 at most independent EV specialists, covering brake fluid, cabin filter, coolant checks for the battery thermal system, and a software check. There's no engine oil, timing components, or exhaust to worry about.

CHAdeMO vs CCS

This matters more than people expect. Japan-market MX-30s use the older CHAdeMO fast-charging standard, while some NZ public fast chargers have prioritised CCS2 in newer installations. CHAdeMO is still widely supported on NZ's charging network for now, but it's worth checking that your regular charging route has CHAdeMO-compatible chargers before you commit, since the standard is gradually being phased out globally.
