The Niro EV sits in an interesting spot in the NZ market — cheaper and more compact than the EV6, but sharing enough underlying EV expertise from Kia that it's built a solid reliability reputation. If you're shopping used, here's exactly what to check on the battery before you buy.

Battery specs by generation

Gen 1 Niro EV (2018–2022): A single 64 kWh pack across the range, offering real-world range of 300–340 km when new. This is the more common generation on the NZ used market currently.

Gen 2 Niro EV (2023–present): A slightly larger 64.8 kWh pack with efficiency improvements, delivering real-world range of 330–370 km.

Why battery health matters more on an older Niro EV

Gen 1 cars are now old enough (up to 8 years) that some are approaching or past their Hyundai-Kia battery warranty window of 8 years or 160,000 km with a 70% capacity guarantee. This makes an independent battery check considerably more important on Gen 1 cars than it would be on a newer EV still comfortably inside warranty.

What a proper battery health check involves

  • Full capacity test measuring actual usable kWh against factory specification
  • Cell balance and internal resistance readout via diagnostic interface, checking for any individual cells degrading faster than the pack overall
  • DC fast-charge curve test, confirming the pack accepts charge at the rate it should — a battery that charges unusually slowly even on a known-good fast charger often signals developing cell issues before capacity loss becomes obvious on the dash
  • Charging history review where accessible, since cars used heavily for high-mileage commuting or ride-share work with frequent DC fast charging tend to show faster degradation

A full diagnostic assessment costs $150–$230 and is, without exaggeration, the most important $200 you'll spend in the buying process.

What typical degradation looks like

OdometerTypical capacity retained
40,000 km95–97%
80,000 km91–95%
130,000 km86–91%
180,000 km+80–87%

These figures assume reasonably normal charging habits. Cars fast-charged almost exclusively, or routinely left at very high or very low charge for extended periods, tend to sit at the lower end or below.

Signs of concern beyond the numbers

  • Range noticeably worse than the capacity test alone would suggest — this can indicate a motor efficiency issue or thermal management problem rather than pure battery ageing
  • Cell voltage warnings appearing during or shortly after charging
  • Charging speed that's dropped noticeably compared to when the car was newer, beyond what capacity loss alone explains
  • Any history of the car being stored for long periods at very low charge — this is one of the most damaging things you can do to a lithium-ion pack and accelerates degradation considerably

If replacement is needed

A reconditioned 64 kWh pack replacement for a Gen 1 Niro EV currently runs $8,000–$10,500 installed; a new OEM pack runs $14,500–$18,000. Against current Gen 1 Niro EV trade values of $18,000–$27,000, a reconditioned replacement can make sense on an otherwise sound car, though the maths is worth doing carefully against simply buying a healthier example instead.

Our recommendation

Never buy a used Niro EV — or any used EV nearing the end of its battery warranty — without an independent capacity and cell health diagnostic. The dash range estimate alone tells you very little about actual pack condition, and the difference between a healthy 92%-capacity pack and a struggling 78%-capacity pack is invisible without proper testing, but very much not invisible in your pocket a year later.
