The Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV shares its bones with the Kia Sorento PHEV covered elsewhere on our site, but the two have taken different paths into New Zealand — and that difference matters more to buyers than the badge does. Here's what to know.

Shared platform, different availability

Both the Santa Fe PHEV (TM, 2021 onward) and Sorento PHEV use the same 13.8kWh battery, 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine, and 195kW combined output on the Hyundai-Kia Group's shared platform. The official WLTP electric range is 56km, with a realistic NZ figure of 36-44km depending on load and driving style. Where they differ is distribution: Hyundai NZ has sold the Santa Fe PHEV in much smaller numbers than Kia has sold the Sorento PHEV, so most examples on our roads are used imports from Korea, Australia, or the UK rather than NZ-new cars with local dealer history.

What that means for buyers

  • Parts lead times can be longer for Santa Fe-specific trim and body parts than for the more common Sorento equivalent, though most drivetrain and battery components are shared
  • Service history is more likely to be incomplete or in a foreign language for import examples — a full workshop translation and inspection is worth the cost before buying
  • Compliance and RUC labelling should be checked at purchase, since imported PHEVs occasionally arrive with incorrect road user charge classification that needs correcting with NZTA

Pricing in NZ (2026)

SourceKilometresTypical price
NZ-new, dealer history20,000-45,000km$54,000-$64,000
Used import (Korea/Australia)30,000-70,000km$46,000-$56,000
Used import, higher mileage70,000-110,000km$38,000-$46,000

NZ-new cars with full dealer service history typically command a $6,000-$8,000 premium over an equivalent-age used import, which is generally worth paying given the peace of mind around service records and correct compliance.

Checks before buying

  • Battery state of health via OBD scan, non-negotiable given the shared platform's known sensitivity to degradation past 70,000km
  • Onboard charger diagnostics, checking for the slow-charge fault reported on early production cars
  • Full charge cycle test on a home wallbox to confirm actual range against the odometer's stated figure
  • AWD system health, checking for clunks or delayed engagement
  • Import compliance documentation, particularly the RUC exemption or reduced-rate classification paperwork

Running costs

Owners who charge nightly and keep trips mostly local report doing the majority of weekly driving on electricity, with fuel use climbing to around 7.8-8.8L/100km once the battery is depleted on longer trips — in line with the Sorento PHEV given the identical drivetrain.

Battery replacement costs

OptionInstalled cost
Reconditioned pack$5,800-$7,800
New OEM pack$9,200-$11,800

Costs track closely with the Sorento PHEV since the pack is identical; the main practical difference is slightly longer wait times if a Hyundai-specific housing or mounting bracket is needed rather than the shared battery cell modules.

Verdict

Mechanically, the Santa Fe PHEV is every bit as capable as the Sorento PHEV, and if you find a well-documented NZ-new example the ownership experience should be near-identical. The bigger risk is buying an under-documented used import without doing the compliance and service-history homework first — that's where most Santa Fe PHEV buyer regrets in New Zealand actually originate, not the drivetrain itself.
