Hyundai Kona Electric Battery Replacement Cost NZ

The Kona Electric has been quietly one of NZ's most popular compact EVs since 2019, and the first generation is now old enough that battery replacement questions are becoming common. Here's what it actually costs and what determines whether it's worth doing.

Battery sizes across generations

Gen 1 Kona Electric (2019–2023): Came in two pack sizes — 39.2 kWh and 64 kWh. The 64 kWh version was far more common in NZ, offering genuinely useful real-world range of 350–400 km when new.

Gen 2 Kona Electric (2024–present): A single 64.8 kWh pack across the range, with improved efficiency and real-world range typically 400–440 km.

Reconditioned Kona packs are becoming more available in NZ as the first Gen 1 cars reach an age where replacement demand exists, but supply remains tighter than for the Leaf.

Signs your Kona Electric battery needs attention

• Range noticeably below what the car achieved when new — more than a 20–25% drop from original figures is worth investigating properly rather than assuming it's normal ageing
• Charging speed capped well below what the car should support, even on a known-good fast charger

Does replacement make financial sense

Current Gen 1 Kona Electric trade values sit at $22,000–$34,000 for 64 kWh models depending on year and condition, and $16,000–$24,000 for the less common 39.2 kWh version. A $8,500–$11,000 reconditioned battery replacement on a 64 kWh car can make sense if the rest of the vehicle is sound and you intend to keep it long term — the maths is tighter than on a Leaf, where replacement costs are proportionally much lower relative to the car's value.

For the 39.2 kWh version, the smaller pack means lower absolute replacement costs, but also a car with less desirable range even after replacement — worth weighing carefully against simply moving up to a 64 kWh example instead.

Warranty considerations first

Before considering paid replacement, always check remaining warranty. Hyundai NZ's battery warranty runs 8 years or 160,000 km with a 70% capacity guarantee — a meaningful proportion of Gen 1 cars on the road are still within this window, and genuine premature degradation below the guaranteed threshold should be pursued as a warranty claim rather than a paid repair.

For the 39.2 kWh version, weigh replacement cost carefully against trading up to a larger-battery example — the price gap between paying for a replacement and buying a healthier 64 kWh car second-hand is often smaller than owners expect.
