Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid vs Electric vs PHEV: The Full IONIQ Family Compared

Before the IONIQ 5 gave Hyundai a dedicated EV platform, the original IONIQ was a genuinely unusual proposition — one car body offered in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full electric form, all sold alongside each other in NZ. Plenty of these are now on the used market, and the question we hear most often is which variant actually makes sense.

The Hybrid is the cheapest and most accessible entry point, the PHEV sits in the middle, and the Electric commands the highest price despite now being an older-generation EV by current standards — its 311km range looks modest next to newer arrivals like the Kona Electric or Kia Niro EV.

The Hybrid: simplest and cheapest to own

The standard IONIQ Hybrid needs no charging at all and delivers genuinely excellent fuel economy — real-world figures of 4.2–4.7 L/100km are common, translating to roughly $760–$850 a year in fuel for 12,000km of driving. This is the pick for anyone without home charging or who simply wants the lowest-hassle ownership experience of the three.

The PHEV: only worth it if you actually plug in

With 63km of EV-only range, the PHEV suits commuters with home charging who mostly drive short distances. Plugged in nightly, many owners report going weeks between fill-ups. But we've inspected plenty of used IONIQ PHEVs in NZ where the previous owner clearly never charged it — evidenced by minimal wear on the charge port and a full service history showing only petrol-mode driving. Buying one of these gets you all the extra weight and complexity of the plug-in system with none of the benefit.

If buying a used IONIQ PHEV, always ask for charging habits and inspect the charge port for wear — a well-used, regularly-charged PHEV is a great buy; a never-charged one is arguably worse value than the plain Hybrid.

The Electric: dated range, but a genuine bargain now

The IONIQ Electric's 311km WLTP range (translating to roughly 230–260km real-world) looks unremarkable against 2026's EV offerings, but its age has pushed used prices down to the point where it's now one of the cheapest ways into full EV ownership in NZ. For a second car, a short commuter run, or a first EV to learn on, it remains a genuinely sound and reliable choice.

Running cost: around $480–$560 a year in electricity for 12,000km, the lowest of the three, with minimal servicing needs beyond tyres, brakes, and cabin filters.

Reliability across all three

All three share the same core mechanical platform and Hyundai's generally strong reliability reputation in NZ. The Electric variant's battery has proven durable — we see very little meaningful degradation even on examples approaching 100,000km, helped by active liquid thermal management that many rivals of the same era lacked.

Verdict

Choose the Hybrid if: you want the simplest, cheapest ownership experience with no charging required.

Choose the PHEV only if: you have home charging and will genuinely use it every day — otherwise, buy the Hybrid instead and save money.

Choose the Electric if: your daily driving comfortably fits within 200–250km and you want the lowest running costs and a genuine bargain entry into EV ownership.

Of the three, the Electric is the most underrated used buy in NZ today — its dated range is irrelevant for most short-commute buyers, and its price reflects age rather than any real shortcoming in reliability.
