Do EVs Actually Need Less Maintenance? (A NZ Mechanic's Take)

The short answer: yes, significantly less. But "less" doesn't mean "none," and some EV-specific maintenance items catch owners off guard. Here's the real picture from our Otara workshop.

What you genuinely don't need on an EV

Engine oil changes. No combustion engine means no engine oil, no oil filter, no oil drain plug to strip. This alone saves $200–$400 per year for most drivers.

Spark plugs. Non-existent.

Timing belt or chain. No engine, no timing belt. This is a significant saving on some petrol cars where timing belt replacement runs $800–$1,200.

Transmission fluid (in most EVs). Most EVs use a single-speed reduction gear that doesn't require fluid changes (though a small number of EVs do have gear oil that needs periodic replacement — check your specific model).

Coolant for the engine. There's no engine, but most EVs do have coolant for battery thermal management and the inverter — more on that below.

Exhaust system. Nothing to rust, nothing to replace.

What EVs do need

Brake fluid

EV brakes last much longer due to regenerative braking — we see EV brake pads lasting 80,000–120,000 km vs 40,000–60,000 km on petrol cars. But brake fluid still absorbs moisture over time and needs replacing every 2 years regardless of mileage. Cost: $120–$180 fitted.

Inverter and battery coolant

The inverter and battery thermal management system use a separate coolant loop that needs flushing every 5–7 years or 100,000 km. Neglecting this accelerates degradation of the inverter and battery electronics. Cost: $180–$280 fitted.

Cabin air filter

Standard maintenance item. Replace every 15,000–20,000 km. More important in EVs with heat pumps because the heat pump efficiency depends on clean airflow.

Tyres

EVs are heavier than equivalent petrol cars (due to the battery) and have instant, high torque from a standstill. Both factors accelerate tyre wear. Budget for tyres 20–30% more often than you would with a petrol car. Higher-mileage EV drivers often go through a set of tyres every 30,000–40,000 km.

12V auxiliary battery

Every EV still has a 12V battery that powers lights, door locks, infotainment, and control systems. These typically last 4–6 years. When they fail, the car may not start — even with a full main battery. Replace proactively at 4 years. Cost: $180–$280 fitted.

Wiper blades and cabin filters

Same as any car. No special EV considerations.

What about hybrids?

Hybrids retain the combustion engine, so most petrol-car maintenance still applies: oil changes, spark plugs, air filter. However:

• Brake pads last longer (regenerative braking)
• The hybrid system itself adds the battery and inverter as maintenance items
• Overall, hybrid maintenance costs are roughly 20–30% lower than a comparable petrol car, not 50–60% lower like a full EV

These are estimates based on standard scheduled maintenance. They don't include tyres (roughly equal across all types, slightly higher for EVs) or unexpected repairs.

The one maintenance item that matters most

For EVs and hybrids alike, the most impactful maintenance decision is battery health monitoring. A battery health check every 2–3 years gives you early warning of degradation, lets you plan financially for eventual replacement, and can catch issues (like cell imbalance) that are cheap to fix early and expensive to fix late.

It's the equivalent of the timing belt inspection on a petrol car — you want to know before it fails, not after.
